Part two, week two

Earworm

Now into the final week of my project I was able to focus on the style, imagery and final poster design.

These images show a sequence of movements that put together with the slogan on top look extremely interesting. I thought that it could capture that feeling of having earworm. I’ve got that earworm, meaning that tune you can’t get out of your head, whether you like it or not.

Firstly I decided to respond with photography by capturing my model wearing earphones for my word earworm. Then to communicate the words meaning, I sketched using continuous line drawing using fine liners. The outcome was interesting and I decided to take it into illustrator and manipulate the colours.

By adding wording it made it more interesting. However I’m not too keen on the style I put on them, the sketching would have looked a lot better if they were less complex or i excluded the earphone wires that dangle from the head. Overall they are interesting but I decided to leave this style behind and go back to my initial ideas of which consisted of vinyl imagery.


Explored the head idea but found it to be too complex and not communicate my non word to its full advantage or compared to the other idea which consisted of a vinyl placed over the top half of the brain.

I began by basing the sketch on LP players and sketched out one by hand. I then scanned it into illustrator, used image trace and then expanded the illustration making it easier to manipulate parts of the design.

I began with using red as it was bold and vibrant to the eye. However I hadn’t explored or taken other colours into consideration. I also drew parts of the illustration separately in case the original sketch was hard to manipulate. Breaking the design down made it easier to visualise the overall style. Therefore enabling me to understand how best to fully communicate the meaning of ear worm. Due to earworm being both a positive and negative word, choosing the colour scheme was slightly difficult.

Therefore through media exploration I looked at colour combinations for the vinyl, choosing colours that contrasted and complimented each other. I used coloured card to explore the circular vinyl styled cut outs.

I also briefly explored a hand drawn font using a thick fine liner. Then took it into illustrator and experimented with the word producing three different designs. The variations consisted of thick block colouring, fine outlining and a red block colouring overlapping a cross hatch sketch I hand drew. Even though I did apply this the top font to one of my designs, I ended up leaving my hand drawn fonts as they clashed with the style of my illustration.

Below shows some Illustrator experimentation showing the progression from the simple block pink colour to the more developed designs with an abundance of colour. I also used the shape vector tool to create more inner rings to falsify the look of a vinyl record.

 

Overall I found choosing the final imagery that communicated my word a challenge, however I decided that the vinyl spinning over the head worked well and communicates that non stop tune of repeat in someone’s head.

My final design I feel communicates the non-word earworm effectively and towards the end of this project, refining the colour scheme and overall look of my poster design was made through thorough refinement. Overall I’m very happy with the design and have gained more skills and feel a lot more confident in my outcomes.

Project Three, Part Two

Creative Advertising

For part two of our project three. Our new brief was to pick a new word not yet classified in the oxford dictionary, my non-words to choose from had different potentials for designs. The aim is to produce a creative poster design in order to communicate my non-word and hopefully gain it’s rightful place in the  Oxford English Dictionary.

To begin with I selected 10 creative adverts and annotated each one, looking at its message, style, colour palette, typography, composition and whether I like the overall design and would use it in my own designing.

Generally humour seemed to be a dominant theme throughout the creative adverts I had selected and is something I kept in mind in my development work.

Then through exploration, I gathered some images that reflected my non word, earworm.  Earworm  by definition is a catchy tune or lyric that is non-stop. Therefore I found some visual cues that would inspire my designing and development work on my word.
img_2150 Through mind map work and collaging, I very quickly realised that I would be using musical symbols such as earphones, headphones and music technology within my designs. By mind mapping the word, I was able to narrow down exactly what the word could entail in terms of meaning and imagery with literal and non literal cues. img_2151

Immediately sketching was a great way to begin to think about the style and imagery by bringing the thoughts on the mind map to life. Fine liners and coloured card and pens were used in order to develop these ideas further. img_2152-2

By looking at font, I could communicate the type of fonts I envision would go with the word earworm. In all, I felt that an irregular, unreformed font would work best. Communicating the visuals that would be associated with a worm. I found various font on DAFONT.COM that could potentially work really well and would need to wait until I have my visuals before applying them to my chosen creative ad idea. img_2153

When developing my ideas with mixed media, I felt it was important to try different colours, that being consistently vibrant and bright to catch the attention of the viewer. As well as being closely linked to the colouring of a worm.
img_2156-2 img_2157 Towards the end of the week, I began to explore the idea of writing inside the head using swirly handwriting and words that consistently suggested how earworm is for the person having it, almost like being a victim of earworm. By taking my own photographs It made it easy to begin sketching with the style of pose I wanted. The swirly fine liner sketching worked well and I tried a few versions in order to find the best style. In the end I liked the ones that connected by continuous line drawing to the earphone. However I may retake or take more photographs as I think the quality of my photographs could have been better. In all I would like to explore more ideas and take more photographs in order to produce a strong creative ad that communicates the meaning of my non word earworm effectively. img_2158-2

Project 3, week 2

To Kill A Mockingbird

Now At the development stage of my project, my book cover design was starting to take shape. From the minute I got the brief I knew that I had only about a week and a half to produce a fresh, interesting and unique design. Different to previous designs seen for this immensely well renowned and loved book. It was a challenge that really got me excited about the project, especially working with stills from the the oscar winning film and taking all my research into the designing stage.

Prior to developing the project, I created a mini summery of all the important factors that really summed up the novel and all it’s prominent themes. The main one that stood out to me was the destruction of the innocent and racial injustice. The story is narrated through young Scout and therefore plays a major part to the visuals. Whilst watching the film, the sequence of Scout moving inside the tire was a visual that hadn’t been played around before with previous book designs and therefore made sense to try this new perspective on the book design. I combined this with the slogan

This would be he foundation to which I would then experiment with layout, colour and text on top.

Quick brief sketching to explore other ideas before settling on my initial idea. From constructive feedback, my initial idea was preferred to the other ideas due to its vibrancy and uniqueness to other ideas.

Having now decided to go with my initial idea, most of the prep sketching, colour considerations had been started. This meant that I could continue to develop the the tire wheel with scout inside by further exploring colour combinations. For me the colours red and orange were most ideal to portraying danger and urgency. Either then combined with a light grey or calmer colour would level out the intensity of the design. The wheel needed to be the most vibrant visual of the design in order to make it stand out and be eye catching.

By photocopying my earlier layout ideas, I could develop this by choosing exactly where I would like the tire wheel to be rolling across the book design. I decided to have the wheel rolling along both pages on the lower part of the book. However later when design in illustrator I changed this to just the front book cover, I felt it would be too repetitive to have the concept rolling on both pages and decided to make this decision.
img_2077The spine of the book was also taken into consideration. Once I had decided the overall front and back design, I decided to use a bright orange spine to compliment my design.

Having now created the tire wheel and looked at appropriate fonts. I could then take these into the book design template and begin to experiment with layout, colour and refine the whole design. img_2084

Through refinement, I was able to create initial design the way I envisioned it and improved it further. Overall I feel this project even though the deadline was short has really challenged me creatively. Ive noticed a strength in my illustration skills, and feel more confident in my work. If there was a weakness, it would be to check my spelling mistakes as they cropped up a few times towards the final refinement of my book cover design. In conclusion I’m very pleased with my outcome and feel an immense improvement in my design and technical skills.

Project 3, Part 1

Workshop

When beginning project three, I was given a prior research task to complete before starting the new brief. The task was to print off 10 images, two lots, in in black and white and other in colour. These images would then be used in the image manipulation workshop, trying different pen, colour blocking and pattern techniques. Colour manipulation is an interesting way of taking an original image and changing certain parts of it to create a new design. Copyrights of images can be difficult in the creative sector and therefore to by extra careful, image manipulation allows the deigned to comfortably use the image without taking another artists rightful piece of work.

Initially I was reluctant when doing this task as I felt uncomfortable with the process of playing with images and not having a specific outcome look at the end. Essentially it was creative ‘playing’ and this was something I haven’t had a lot of previous experience of.  However I thoroughly enjoyed the process of experimenting with different media, especially coloured pink card and white and gold opaque felt tip pens. Tracing paper, with coloured paper and coloured opaque white and gold pens.

To Kill A Mockingbird

When given the brief, my immediate thoughts were of all visuals and images that could be used for this project. For part one, our project is a live brief for Penguin Books. To design a book cover the the award winning novel To Kill A Mockingbird, the design has to be fresh and avoid styles to previous book cover designs for this popular book.

By doing thorough research on the book’s plot and also by watching the oscar winning film, I was able to condense what the novel was about and it’s different symbols and visuals could be experimented with creatively.

To begin with I collected existing book cover designs of the novel, which in essence were predominantly dated in style and had a classic approach design wise. Then I found various images of other book designs of other novels, predominantly well known ones with some really exciting design approaches. Generally they used illustration and a lot of block colouring which is a style I would perhaps explore myself when designing my book cover.

Initial brainstorming

I then began to explore my initial thoughts and ideas for the project in response to the research I had dome so far. By sketching them out, It made it easier to see the possible book cover designs come to reality on paper. By taking my favourite visuals from the film, I then sketched out scout in the car tire which is rolling along the ground. I used various sizes of fine liners and drawing techniques and found to enjoy doing this a lot.

I had a quick look at the types of font that I could use for any project, although this may be subject to change due to the image of illustration I choose to use for my book cover design.

Week 4, Project 2

Development

Having produced various designs that would possibly be final design through having a bit more refinement. I decided that I wanted to explore one more idea before committing to my chosen design for my stationary.

I decided to simplify my Lorde face and tiara logo and create a more complex or striking backdrop for my stationary collection. To begin, I used transparent paper over the existing logo and created numerous simpler logo designs. Different techniques were explored, continuous line, jagged, swirly and straight fine liner marks and more. I found the simpler I made the design the easier and more visible it became to the eye. Which in an essence is what a logo should comply of, making it recognisable to a customer and potentially to a wider span of audience eventually.

For the backdrop, I steered away from my previous mood boards looking at complex, intricate patterns and focused on colour and line marking instead. The new simpler logo needed to be lifted by either vibrancy or interesting marks which would complement its style. Since my logo consisted of swirly, loose pen marks. I felt the backdrop should mimic that, emphasising it and making it more apparent to the eye.

By using coloured pro- markers, card and the freedom to create endless marks. I made some really bold lines in which I scanned into Photoshop. Firstly I tried putting the swirly marks into the design, but found it too overpowering and distracting. After having found this style to complicate my stationary designs, rather than compliment them. I then took the simplest loose brushstrokes, enlarged them, brightened them and finally placed them underneath my logo design. This layout worked extremely well, leading me to play with this composition of marks.

When refining this design, an appropriate typeface for Lorde needed to be used to fit the design. Immediately, I knew a simple swirly typeface would complete the overall style and therefore I looked at the refining one I envisioned with different thicknesses of fine liners.

The first mock ups of the stationary designs were strong and concise in style throughout the collection. The colours shown here are not correct to the design, but do show the overall look and the clear contrast of the two which I feel lifts the design. However the stationary designs still needed refining.

I found that the edges of the typeface were not long enough for the design and didn’t sit well in the layout as it was. By taking the typeface into illustrator I was able to extend the lines using the pen tool. This made the layout look more fluid.

Having refined this stationary collection through extensive sketchbook research, development and media. I overall feel that this is a strong design for the final collection. I do however prefer the previous logo design and watercolour inks. Both designs have been out of my comfort zone, however I like the more striking visuals of the previous to this design and feel it communicates her style more correctly. In all, this design is strong enough as a final outcome for the stationary design and a this point is my final design.

week 3, project 2

Stationary

Having now explored my chosen artist Lorde through design and various sketching techniques.  Now in week three developing stationary designs using my logo concepts I created after in week two of this project. I thoroughly enjoyed creating various logo designs and meant that I had a few to choose from.

In all, I did some extensive experimentation for Lorde as I felt i needed to explore all my ideas and could see many potential styles and looks for my artist. I prefer the monochrome look as it conveys Lorde’s grungy aura about her. Fine liners were the best way to sketch and try new styles and my preferred technique was the geometric trace which I ended up using for most of the final designs.

Having created the logo design for my artists brand identity. Next was to design the stationary which included a letter head, compliment slip and business card. To develop these designs I created a mood-board with various patterns that complimented my style and characteristic of my artist and logo designs.

This mood board was purely made to show the various styles, patterns and outlook of the type of styles that could potentially be explored and discretely put into my stationary designs. Repeated geometric shapes were explored as well as dotted patterns which linked well with my Lorde’s brand identity.

  To compliment the logo designs, I experimented with colour, pattern and watercolour. It was important for me not to over complicate the design and leave space for the information of my artist.

Strong colours such as red, yellow and orange I included in my thumbnail sketches as I felt they were bold, feisty and completely wrapped up Lorde’s main distinctive features of being edgy and played with the colours of a bee. To emphasis her queen bee identity, I played around with triangular shapes which could be seen a bee stings. This for me was a simple way of playing with her strong qualities in a colourful suggestive way.

Having experimented with a more geometric, angular approach I decided to explore orange dots in various patterns and layouts.

This design above worked really well in my sketchbook. However when it came to creating this design in both Illustrator and InDesign. I struggled to execute the excitement and layout of the thumbnail with quality. I’ve shown the process in my sketchbook to how the experimentation but I feel I work better with hand drawn designs due to lacking the skills of knowing how to use certain software. This is something I need to improve as my strong ideas are let down by my lack of IT skills.

img_1884 After having struggled with making my ideas into strong outcomes through InDesign, I moved back to creating my designs more predominately by hand.

By changing back to more hand drawn approach to designing my stationary in InDesign meant I could have better control of the outcomes for my stationary. I chose I chose a deep shade of purple to suggest my Lord’s grungy quality and let it drip down the page for a dramatic striking appearance. These designs are much stronger than the earlier patterned concepts purely created with my chosen software. The purple adds excitement, intrigue and allowed me to explore the various logos on photocopies of the study.

As I enjoyed using watercolour so much, it lead me to another idea. I decided to created a background wash to a logo design using geometric trace of Lord’s face to create a colourful study which I combined together in InDesign.

I throughly enjoyed creating this stationary design that I went ahead to created all three stationary designs. I started with lightly tracing the face on watercolour card, then I applied the watercolour to various parts of the face and blew on the ages to create the spilling effect. Then I scanned this into InDesign, applied the geometric logo design and finally the Lorde typography that I created to show where my lettering would be placed.

At this stage, I feel confident that I have produced some designs with a mixture of different media’s, styles, mistakes and some good quality design concepts.

Week 1, Project 2

Branding

On day 1,  I started project two called ‘Branding’. I learned about the different types of branding from identity by looking at colour and typography to the types of advertising such as zines. After receiving the list of stores to begin our project with. I chose Urban Outfitters and All Saints. I decided that they were right for my project and shops I admire, like to browse in and purchase from. These two brand inspire me from their overall look of store, colouring and identity. As well as their merchandise and products. I sourced my own primary research from these stores by looking at the inside interior to the shop windows. Both brands are different in terms of style, target market and retail pricing, and was interesting initial research for the project.

On day 2, a double page spread was taken up for brainstorming of visual designs for branding. I looked at zines, logos, posters, brochures and music album covers. I loved exploring the many variations of designs and picked the ones I found the intriguing into my research.

On day 3, I was given my muse task sheet with a list if different individuals who are well known. I debated over a few of the names before choosing Lorde. I would say she was a less obvious options as supposed to the likes of Prince or Kurt Cobain. She has a very short but interesting rise to the music industry and has some distinct features which can be explored visually.

I do really admire Lorde and her music, in particular the music video for her first debut single ‘Royals’ which was instantly a major hit worldwide. I love her unusual winged eye liner, distinctive hair and piercing blue eyes. For more visuals, I would probably play with some of her lyrics like ‘queen bee’ and other phrases for inspiration. As well as visuals of her background such as New Zealand. The main colours I would experiment with would be black, white, blue, green, silver and gold. All this research is put into a visual mind- map containing the main features of the artist Lorde.

I’m really looking forward to developing this project and see the types of visuals there is possible for my muse.
